In the world of fragrance, there are scents that simply smell pleasant, and then there are those that create an entire atmosphere around them. Libre Santal Couture by YSL Beauty aims to belong to the second category — a new interpretation of the iconic Libre line, where floral femininity meets a warm, almost velvety woody depth.
Dua Lipa once again takes center stage as the face of the fragrance. The campaign transports viewers far away from familiar urban settings to the South African desert. This choice is far from accidental: the new fragrance is built around a sandalwood accord that gives the classic floral Libre composition a warmer and more seductive character.
The Libre line has long played with contrasts. Its core idea is to combine traditionally feminine floral notes with bolder, more unconventional accents in women’s perfumery.
Libre Santal Couture continues this concept but makes it even more expressive. It is the first floral woody Eau de Parfum in the Libre collection, with sandalwood becoming not merely a background note but one of the main protagonists of the composition.
Perfumers Anne Flipo and Carlos Benaïm faced a challenging task: transforming a traditionally more masculine woody facet into a distinctly feminine olfactory signature.
The result is described as velvety, sensual and utterly addictive.
The central accord of Libre Santal Couture is warm sandalwood, which gives the fragrance depth and softness.
Its role is particularly intriguing. Rather than overpowering the floral side of the composition, sandalwood seems to envelop it. As a result, the fragrance can feel both delicate and confident, warm and daring at the same time.
This play of opposites is what makes it a true representative of the Libre aesthetic: femininity here does not mean fragility.
French lavender opens the composition, having already become one of Libre’s signature elements.
It is contrasted with a sensual orange blossom accord. To create it, YSL Beauty used Moroccan orange blossom absolute as well as Headspace technology, which allows the scent of flowers to be captured with remarkable precision.
Particularly symbolic is the fact that the composition incorporates scent data from orange blossoms grown in YSL Beauty’s Ourika Community Gardens.
Sandalwood from New Caledonia adds the final layer of depth to the composition and is sourced with sustainability principles in mind.
For the new campaign, YSL Beauty has once again chosen Dua Lipa.
The singer embodies the Libre woman — confident, independent and sensual at the same time. The campaign was shot in the South African desert under the direction of Romain Wygas.
The visual concept perfectly reflects the character of the fragrance: an endless landscape, warm tones, a sense of freedom and the almost physical presence of the sun.
The campaign also features a special soundtrack: Dua Lipa’s own version of Aretha Franklin’s “Think.”
This choice also says a lot about the Libre woman: a classic receives a modern interpretation without losing its character.
The new Libre interpretation continues the line’s central philosophy: femininity can take many forms.
It can be soft without being weak. Sensual without being obvious. Elegant while still full of character.
That is why Libre Santal Couture does not simply attempt to replicate the success of its predecessors. Instead, it takes the familiar Libre formula and adds more warmth, depth and woody confidence.
The new fragrance is already available on the YSL Beauty website and is priced at $155.
For anyone who loves fragrances with character, Libre Santal Couture could become one of the most intriguing fragrance launches of the season.
