Emma Heming, the wife of Bruce Willis, has shared detailed information about the early symptoms of dementia that the famous actor has faced.
Willis, known for his roles in action films, was diagnosed with dementia two years ago, but initially, he was found to have aphasia—a symptom that can indicate this condition.
Emma noted that diagnosing dementia can be quite challenging. She explained that "frontotemporal dementia whispers, it doesn't scream," and expressed the difficulty in pinpointing when Willis began to lose himself due to the illness. At first, the family observed speech problems that resembled stuttering, with which Bruce had struggled in his childhood. However, over time, these symptoms began to point to a more serious issue.
"In childhood, he had severe stuttering. He attended college, and a theater teacher advised him to memorize scripts. This helped him cope with stuttering and propelled him into acting," Emma shared. Unfortunately, when speech problems reemerged, the family assumed it was merely a return of the stuttering.
Emma noted that dementia initially developed in the temporal lobes of the brain and later spread to the frontal lobe, affecting Bruce's ability to walk, talk, think, and make decisions. As is well known, there is no medication for this disease, and the actor's condition will only worsen.
Bruce's wife also discussed how she talks to their daughters about their father's condition. According to her, she adheres to a principle of transparency, explaining everything as it is and not hiding anything. Emma noted that if the children ask questions, they are ready to hear the truth.
"They understand that their dad will not get better. I try to be as honest with them as possible. This disease is chronic, progressive, and untreatable. Obviously, I don't like to talk about the end aspect, but they know that nothing will change," Emma added.
This situation reminds all of us of the importance of supporting loved ones and the necessity of discussing difficult topics with openness and honesty.
