Lily Collins, the star of the series Emily in Paris, and her 41-year-old husband, director Charlie McDowell, have become parents for the first time. Their daughter was born via a surrogate, and the happy parents have already shared the first pictures of their baby on social media.

"Welcome to the center of our world, Tuve Jane McDowell. Words cannot express our endless gratitude to our incredible surrogate and everyone who helped us along the way. We love you immeasurably," Lily wrote on her Instagram.

But while this is a joyful event in the Collins-McDowell family’s life, it has sparked heated debates on social media.

The news triggered a storm of comments. Some users congratulated the actress, while others accused her of turning surrogacy into "a privilege of the rich."

"Surrogacy is pure capitalism. The rich just don’t want to waste time with pregnancy, so they pay women who urgently need money," wrote one user.

But Lily has many defenders as well. They reminded people that for some families, it’s the only chance to have children, and that surrogates do this voluntarily and for fair compensation.

Charlie McDowell also responded to the hate:

"It’s okay not to know why someone needed a surrogate. It’s okay not to know the motives of the surrogate. It’s okay to spend less time on hate and more on love."

Surrogacy has long been a controversial topic. Some see it as a lifesaver for couples who cannot have children naturally. Others see it as body trade, especially when it involves celebrities.

But why are women mostly the ones being criticized? Doesn’t everyone have the right to choose how they want to start a family?

Lily Collins chose her own path to motherhood. It may not be the path of most, but it’s hers. And little Tuve Jane is already the happiest child because she was born into a family that waited for and loves her.
